This blog article contains all the background information about the artworks "At ease" and the "At ease sequence" series. Let's start with the latter:
"At ease sequence"
With "At ease sequence", I want to ask the viewer a question:
When you look at a work of art that only shows a section or a short sequence of something larger, a separate story emerges in your mind - a story that doesn't have to have anything to do with the original image.
What happens to this new idea when you then remove the filter and look at the whole picture? Does the first interpretation hold up? Can it endure or is it overwritten with the knowledge of the actual subject and disappears?
The series "At ease sequence" is such a sequence. The pictures show a deliberately chosen section from the larger main work "At ease" and in this way play with the question described above.
The series will contain a total of six works. You can find more photos of the works under "Work." or (if still available) together with the price in the catalog.
"At ease"
After "Tenerife" from 2021, the new work "At ease" is my second artistic exploration of surfing - a passion that I myself have been pursuing for almost 20 years. In contrast to "Tenerife", in "At ease" I have used a technique that is already familiar from many of my works:
Working with larger polygonal wooden elements. The great challenge is to create a fluid movement through the interplay of arrangement, grain and color despite the lack of detail.
In the composition of this work, I deliberately reduced the number of elements to two harmonizing surfaces (wave and sky). The surfer sets an accent point, both in terms of its color and its position slightly offset from the center, which supports and rounds off the dynamics of the picture.
At ease" is about a feeling, about the state of flow that you achieve when you have been practising a sport for years, the movements have become second nature and you can fully enjoy the moment. Tense concentration becomes focused relaxation.
